Obstetrics at Brooks Memorial Hospital

At Brooks Memorial Hospital, we specialize in the care and medical evaluation of mothers and their newborns through the provision of safe, evidence-based standards of care. This care will be provided by the caring hands and compassionate hearts of the highly trained and skilled nursing staff. The OB Nursing staff at Brooks is credentialed in three areas: Nursery, Postpartum, and Labor & Delivery. This allows for continuity of care from admission through discharge.  All members of the Obstetrics staff are also NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) and Electronic Fetal Monitoring certified .

The Obstetrics staff at Brooks does not just care for patients while they are in the hospital. To help prepare the mother-to-be prior to delivery, a series of prenatal education classes are offered to patients, along with a class on breastfeeding. The OB staff also includes a Certified Lactation Counselor who is available to assist with breastfeeding issues even after mother and baby go home.

The new central monitoring system in the Brooks Obstetrics unit provides wireless monitoring of contractions, heart rate, and other vital statistics for both mother and baby during labor. The system’s remote access feature allows Physicians to access this information from their office and home, to continually monitor mother and baby.

During the baby’s hospital stay, the doctors and nursery staff are here to provide you and your family with all the support and preparation you need during the first few days of your baby’s life. Our goal is to provide you with an environment that enhances family attachment and supports the bonding process between you and your baby. The Brooks OB Department has three state-of-the-art birthing rooms that provide the perfect setting for labor and delivery, and private post-partum rooms for each new mother helps to help make her stay at Brooks a pleasant one. Obstetrics Nurse Manager Roselle Atzrott and the OB staff are very excited about the new patient furniture that was recently installed in each room on the unit. The OB rooms have new tables and chairs for parents to eat their meals at; new over-bed tables and nice pull-out recliners or couches for dad to sleep on. The post partum rooms have new beds for the mothers comfort.

During their brief stay in Obstetrics, mothers receive counseling in lactation and important information about their new baby. Our OB staff provides education on infant care, breastfeeding, and any additional topics that the mother requires. In addition, every patient room has access to our Patient Education Channel with a variety of educational topics that can be reviewed at the patient’s convenience.

The Obstetrics Unit is located on the first floor of the hospital and access to the unit is controlled via a call system located in the Family Waiting Room adjacent to the unit. It is very important that mothers and babies receive as much rest as possible; we suggest that Maternity and Labor Wing visits be limited to immediate family and no more than 2 visitors at a time. Since all mothers now have private rooms, Dad is welcome to stay as long as he wishes. The unit also has a state of the art infant security system to insure the safety of each and every newborn at Brooks.

Our newborn nurseries are magical places, and we are truly privileged to help your newborn baby transition from life in the womb to life in the outside world. We look forward to welcoming you and your family.
